The following speech was given by Patty Mark, in memory of the Unknown Animal:
"Over 64 billion land animals, including chickens, pigs, cows, sheeps, ducks and turkeys, are killed every year to feed 7 billion humans on our planet. The majority of these animals we breed, raise and slaughter continuously. We call this violence ‘animal agriculture’.
We stand here today to honor our loved ones. Animals who once felt pain, fear, sorrow or neglect. Most of them died because they were looked upon by our society not as sentient individuals, but as property.
We stand here today united in our immense grief. We are thinking of all the animals who are sick, crippled and unable to reach food and water in factory farms.
We are thinking of animals literally buried in their own excrement in so called ‘free range’ farms. We are thinking of animals who are restrained by metal clips in research laboratories, about to be cut open. And in our hearts and minds are all the animals who are struggling in fishing nets or lines, slowly suffocating.
We are not asking society to improve the welfare of all those animals confined or trapped in industrial animal factories, laboratories circuses, zoos, aquariums, but to free them. We are appealing to our fellow humans, to extend the mantle of social justice, freedom and equality to include all sentient beings.
Animals are not our property, they are not our slaves. Animals are not raw materials for our personal desires, are to you that call for our own ends. Animals are individual, just like we are.
We stand here today to encourage our fellow humans to broaden their circle of compassion. By publicly acknowledging these animals, and putting a face to them, and the relentless suffering they must endure. We would like people to reflect on any harmful choices they may make. We encourage everyone to also reflect on the grave and ever-increasing environmental destruction caused by animal agriculture. We are all in this together. We stand here today united as vegans. Vegans chose not to use any animal products in order to extend justice and equality to all sentient beings who share this planet with us. We are not better or worse than anyone else, but we share a deep and abiding belief that all life deserves respect, dignity and personal freedom.”

"Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission—to be of service to them wherever they require it.” - Francis of Assisi
